KAT CHAT Khandallah Arts Theatre Newsletter July 2005 Club Night, Cochran Hall Tuesday July 19 7.30pm An evening of One Act Play readings. We'll have a variety of plays, so come along and enjoy them, as well as supporting club members. Three womenwas written by NZ playwright Campbell Smith and first performed in October 2000 to celebrate the exhibition 'Frances Hodgkins: The Field Collection' at the Waikato Museum of Art and History. It is the portrait of three women, one of whom is NZ artist Frances Hodgkins, but rather than simply a biography, it is a portrait of a family in late 19th century NZ. In this production, directed by Paul Langham, Joy McLeod takes the role of the mother Rachel, Margaret Walls will direct a lively modern version of Everyman, the English Morality play. Written by NZ playwright Margaret Bremner, it has a
cast of four. Dominik Gibbs will play Everyman, with Lyn Coory, Alice Pearce, and Adam Burstall. A thrid play is possible - come and find out! Supper duty will be Jackie Vaughan, Joy McLeod, and Marie Thomson. Please come early to help us set up, and let Marj (phone 972-6180), know if you are unable to do supper. Outreach on July 17 Members of KAT will perform Everyman at the Khandallah Presbyterian Church's Winter Festival of drama. We are delighted to take part in this Festival. Scenes from Shakespeare: June club night This was a splendid evening of soliloquies, duologues,
and sonnets; we were pleased to see such a wide group of KAT members taking
part, and we were also delighted to have a group from Newlands College perform an extract from Hamlet. We
experienced again, how powerful the words of Shakespeare are, performed as the
bard intended, with minimal sets and props. We celebrated Winter solstice with
hot ginger wine, and a fun evening was had by all. Thank you to Margaret Walls
for organising this event, and to all who took part. FUTURE EVENTS August 16: Planning for 2006 This year our planning meeting for 2006 will be an open
forum, so that all club members can have input into the programme for next year.
It's your chance to tell us of exciting new ideas you've had, and how you've
always longed to direct a play for KAT! So come along to the Cochran Hall on
Tues. Aug 16 at 7.30pm. September 20: Poetry evening   New Zealand poetry, with Speech and Drama students performing work from recent exams. Please contact Glenys if you'd like to take part in the poetry reading. October Major Production Bedroom Farce, by Alan Ayckbourn. This, our third major production for the year, opens on October 6th. We are delighted to have Ian Munro to direct this for us. Please see the
separate notice for audition details, and helpers needed.. November 15 Margaret Walls will direct a reading of a 3-act play. LIGHTING WORKSHOP Wellington District Theatre Federation recently held a
lighting workshop. Margaret Robertson., Hilary Rutherford, and Ross Foubister
attended, and found it a really worthwhile day. Tutor Stephen Blackburn gave a
fascinating illustrated lecture on the history of lighting, and the technical details about how to plot and implement the lighting plan. MEMBERS' NEWS: James Owen is off to The Globe in London with the Sheilah Winn scholarship students. We wish him well on this exciting
adventure. James was part of the Newlands College group who performed at the Shakespeare night, and he'll tell members of KAT all
about his exciting trip on his return to New Zealand. Sadly, we farewell another KAT member - Ben Cain is off to Hamilton to live. We hope he'll be back in Wellington before too long! RECENT WORKING BEES: On Saturday July 2, members of the committee had a
working bee at the container and the wardrobe under Khandallah Presbyterian
Church. Jillian and Euan are very kindly storing some of our lesser-used items in their attic, so we were able to

done.
